CHAPTER FIVE

KATE

This is really happening. Mindy told me it would. Deep down I knew it would. There’s just something about him. I’m the moth and he’s the flame. I know we should stop. But I don’t want to. I’ve never had a man say the things he’s said to me. And while this may be too fast, I don’t care. I want this. I want him.

His hands are hesitant as he strokes my back and sides. His hardness grazes against me each time I press into him wanting friction. Needing friction.

When his lips leave mine and trail along my jawline I whisper, “take me somewhere.”

His breath is hot against my ear. “Yeah?”

“Yeah.”

He works his way slowly back around to my lips, kissing and nipping at my skin as he does. Lowering me to the ground, he holds me until I’m steady.

“I need to lock up for Mr. Montanelli.”

I watch as he checks all the doors and ensures everything is secure. He’s moving slowly. I’m sure to give me time to tell him I’ve changed my mind. But I haven’t. I won’t.

He looks at the table with the bottle of wine and cannoli on it. “We should take that, huh?”

“Definitely!”

He grabs the tray; I grab the bottle of wine and two glasses. Walking through the doorway, our leftovers are sitting on the table by the backdoor just as Mr. Montanelli said they would be. There’s an empty carton and wine bag waiting for us as well. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think those two were playing matchmaker.

“Guess they knew we’d have leftover cannoli, huh?” Adam chuckles and shakes his head. He’s probably thinking the same thing as I am.

With everything packed and in the bag, we walk out the door. Adam locks it behind us and takes my hand as we make our way over to his truck. He walks me around to the passenger side and opens the back door of the crew cab, putting the bag on the seat. Once he closes it, he turns to me. Reaching over, he cups my cheek and brushes his thumb softly back and forth. The stroke of his thumb against my skin makes me shiver. He stares into my eyes with such intensity, my knees grow weak.

“I can still take you home, you know. It’s okay.”

“I haven’t changed my mind, Adam. If you have, that’s okay, too.”

He grins mischievously. “Nope. My mind hasn’t changed.”

He helps me into his truck and closes the door. After he settles into the driver’s seat and starts the engine, he reaches over and takes my hand. I can’t help but smile. None of the men I’ve dated in the past have been hand holders. I could get use to this.

“I only live about fifteen minutes away off of Kenmore. We’ll be there shortly.”

“Kenmore? I live on Lakeland. We’re right around the corner from one another.”

“That’s crazy. The next thing you’re going to tell me is your dad is my Captain!”

“He is, you dork.” I bump his elbow with mine on the armrest.
